    D.L. Mabery finalists to screen at Suburban World grand opening Saturday and Sunday.

    Five Minnesota independent feature films and five short films were nominated for the Minnesota Film and TV Board's annual "D.L. Mabery Award," the only award recognizing Minnesota independent film. The finalists in each category, features and shorts, will be presented in a special free screening at the Suburban World theater.

    Rolf Belgum's hit Driver 23, though not a finalist for the D. L. Mabery award, will be screened at 9:30.

    The fifth finalist, I Hate Babysitting! by Tara Spartz, will screen during the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival in April.

    The 10 finalists received the most votes out of the 37 independent projects nominated, by almost 400 members of the state's film/video community.

    Winners will be announced at a special dinner Oscar night March 24, 2002, in conjunction with the Minnesota AIDS Project fundraiser "Hollywood!" at the Historic Orpheum Theater in downtown Minneapolis.

    Dubbed the "Minnesota Oscar," the D. L. Mabery Award is named for a longtime friend of the arts and journalist who devoted his energies to covering the Minnesota arts scene at Skyway News and many other local and national publications.
